Respect club protested against killing of stray dogs

The rally was a "vigil", which is to call people to the cruel killing of street dogs in Romania back into consciousness. With lots of bare skin and fake blood, it was the activists on Saturday anyway guaranteed to attract the attention of passers-by. The goal: To end the killing of stray dogs in Romania.

Street dogs are euthanized
Background is a controversial law that allows the Romanian local authorities to euthanize stray dogs. The law is unconstitutional since the end of September 2013, and was decided by the Constitutional Court (VGH).President Traian Basescu should countersign the law, may now those dogs that are not adopted at the shelter for 14 days, to be killed. However, it is also possible to extend the shelter stay.
"The euthanasia is the ultimate solution to the extreme solution", VGH President Augustin Zegrean told the news agency "Mediafax". About 150 people took part in the Romanian capital Bucharest on a spontaneous street protest against the decision. Since the House of Representatives on 10 September has passed the controversial law, protests against the killing of stray dogs will be held again in Romania.
Thousands of stray dogs in Bucharest
In early August this year, had bitten a child of four stray dogs. Then the tightening of the law was decided subsequently brought against the parliamentarians at VGH 30 because of the "trauma of civil society" opposition. In Bucharest alone, there are, according to media reports, more than 65,000 stray dogs, thousands of city residents are bitten annually.

Respect the club holds the next vigil against the killing of stray dogs in Romania on Saturday 9th November at 9.30 clock in the beginning of the pedestrian zone in Freilassing (district of Berchtesgaden country).

Targu-Jiu Killing Fields.

The Mayor of Targu-Jiu, Florin Carciumaru ,( Gorj county )Romania will visit Forbach , a sister town in France...We kindly ask you, to send this letter to the Forbach city council, in order for them to advise the Mayor to adopt civilized, humane and compassionate methods to reduce the number of stray dogs in Targu - Jiu, to refuse the mass killing and last, but not least to put an end to the mass poisoning of dogs which is taking place, almost daily, in his town, from the beginning of September...
HORROR and MORE HORROR comes to light...in Gorj county...Romania, since the hysteria has been launched in the Media...everyday more and more dogs are found POISONED in Targu Jiu and NOW LOOK....Please join Pro Animals Romania ( second link here ) in Face book....) Bellow there are a couple of links from local and national mass-media illustrating the slaughter of strays from Tg-Jiu in past years and despite all these cruelties the number of strays is the same or even bigger.

Dear Mayor of Forbach,
Ladies and Gentlemen of the City Council,
We found out that next week a team from Tg-Jiu City Hall, Romania, led by the mayor Florin Carciumaru will come to your city for an official visit. We understand that the aim of the visit is the union between Tg-Jiu and Forbach.
We are amazed that a civilized country like France, who has deep respect for animals and for their welfare would want to accept this union taking into account that Tg-Jiu city, and especially Mayor, Florin Carciumaru, are well known for the lack of respect towards animals and for the disregard of the international animals legislation.
During time, the stray dogs problem had been handled in a very inefficient and inhumane way by the local authorities, who spent huge amount of funds without solving the situation, on the contrary Tg-Jiu city being under the spotlight due to the cruelties committed against stray animals.
Since 2000 the number of strays had never decreased, despite killing policies adopted, on the contrary the number of strays increasing from year to year due to the lack of neutering and adoption policies. Actually it seems that Tg-Jiu authorities have no interest to solve stray dogs problem, in a civilized way, despite all the support received during time from local ngos and even ngos from abroad ( including Brigitte Bardot Foundation).
Unfortunately, in the last weeks, Tg-Jiu is again under national and international mass-media attention for the cruelties happening there daily. Information and photos had been sent also to EU members.

Tg-Jiu had started a massive slaughter of stray animals by poisoning, for weeks dead bodies are being found continuously on the streets.
Please urge Tg-Jiu mayor to adopt an efficient and humane method of managing stray population and stop using barbaric ways that have proven no result during past years , just a terrible bad image of the city.

The initial reports that a 4 year old child was attacked and killed by feral dogs, is now being questioned...This story which recently appeared in the press, has resulted in the authorised culling of thousands of shelter animals, street dogs, and unregistered pets, having been given the go-ahead by the Romanian Government.However, this story concerning the 4 year old boy is now being brought into doubt...Gary Edwards (Norton Foundation) and the original 'A'-Team (Animal Team) from the Bulgarian 'Justice for Borko' mission, are gathering once more, and this time we may have other celebrities joining us. EXCLUSIVE - Over a hundred Greeks come to Romania . Protest anti -euthanasia and adopt strays
Romania received a red card and from Greece for providing euthanasia bill within 14 days of the stray dogs that are not claimed or adopted . Over a hundred Greeks protested in front of the Romanian Embassy in Greece. They were involved in the fight against euthanasia of stray dogs in our country. Anti -euthanasia peaceful protesters will come to Romania , in a humanitarian mission . The goal is to non -violent protest against the legalization of euthanasia of stray dogs and adopt stray dogs , which we would kill them if CCR mass decide that the amendments adopted by MEPs are constitutional .
Greek protesters solidarity with the movement of animal lovers in Romania . In order to protest stated that they are aware of the serious and tragic recent events in Romania and want to support those who mourn for the victims of these events. Protesters in Greece will leave Friday . Peaceful demonstration will take place on Saturday .
One of the protesters , Iainna Pseftinakoy said for why News that adopt stray dogs from shelters in Romania . She works with a Kennel protecting stray animals .
Adoption is a cumbersome process , protesters Greeks were informed that Romania no longer issue passports for sending their dogs from Romania to Greece.
Iainna Pseftinakoy said: " We understand that we are not allowed to leave the dogs in Romania to Athens , because no free animal passports to leave the country ." She added that they will take the necessary steps " to adopt a dog , or to prepare everything needed for passports , vaccinations , microchip , sterilization , and then we will send in Romania, Greece, in cages , as normal " .

In 2011 , a stray dog in Greece was declared by Time Magazine Person of the Year . Loukanikos , as it was called by protesters , stood first, fighting every moment with gendarmes and tear gas . Later he was adopted .

Protest in Bucharest
During last weekend hundreds of people gathered in the center of Bucharest to protest. Many came with their dogs, some were adopted from the streets. Sadly there is another great conflict in Romania now (about Rosia Montana) and the press doesn't debate too much about the dogs these days. On Saturday night, an ex senator came with a copy of a petition he sent to the Constitutional Court, a petition signed by other 30 senators. They asked the President NOT to pass the law for killing dogs, some very wellknown lawyers did the same. However, the president, Traian Basescu, has always had a very cruel attitude towards stray dogs and I heard he might pass the law anyway.
The press has instigated people and filled them with hate these days, showing pictures of violent dogs, they made Romanians believe like we're in a huge danger. This only made people who already disliked dogs to show their hate and encouraged some to throw poisoned food outside. I heard of so many cases of dogs that died like this.
I also heard the Constitutional Court will make a decision in about 10 days... don't know what this means for the dogs that have already been caught.
I feel nothing but shame and pain, but I really hope we'll manage to save the situation somehow. I've seen pictures of foreigners protesting on Facebook, everybody seems so involved and caring. Hopefully the pressure will make our President change his mind.
They say millions of dollars were spent on sterilizing but this doesn't reflect in the actual number of dogs on the streets. That money vanished and now they act like killing is the only way left.
The 60$ per caught dog thing is the one that makes me most mad. They pay this out of public funds and people seem to accept it, even though it's clearly not ok.
The exact figures are : adopting more than one dog in Bucharest costs 150RON (that would mean 44.53$), the shelters are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9AM and 3PM, but on TV i saw that some shelters denie visitors access until the killing law passes (basically those dogs have no chance).
Also, an independent TV post (Realitatea TV) investigated and found out that the companies that signed contracts for catching the dogs CAN'T be found at the addresses they claim to have, and the neighbours have never heard of those companies when the reporters went there and asked. Basically they might not even be legal.
A Vier Pfoten representant was intervied and said catching one dog should not cost more than 5Euros (gas, the payment for the driver and the dog catcher). Wasting 10 times that amount is a huge lie and bad use of public funds.
Meanwhile, there are dogs poisoned in many cities in Romania (I presume they throw poisoned food in areas where the dogs can't be caught).
