"It is forbidden to euthanize dogs, cats and other animals, except animals with incurable diseases identified by the veterinarian."



LAW NO. 9/2008 (Law MARINESCU 1) remains in force. Euthanasia is prohibited.

Animal welfare organizations, animal lovers, personalities, initiator of the law, Marius Marinescu, officially draw attention to the observance of the Law no. 9/2008 Animal Protection Law (Law Marinescu 1), the law that reflect the provisions of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, signed by Romania in Strasbourg and which are in force.

Article 7 index 1 of the Act provides:

"It is forbidden to euthanize dogs, cats and other animals, except animals with incurable diseases identified by the veterinarian."

GEO (Government Emergency Ordinance) 155/2001 concerning euthanasia, approved on 10.09.2013 by the law passed by the Parliament, does not repeal the law Marinescu 1.

Acknowledges this way we will fill criminal complaints against mayors and veterinarians who euthanize healthy dogs, because it violates the law and is liable under Article 23 of "imprisonment up to 3 years" for "animal cruelty".

The euthanasia of healthy dog which was held in 2001 under Ordinance 155/2001, approved by Law 227/2002 and consolidated by Law no. 391/2006, was canceled in 2008 in the country, with the entry into force of Law no. 9/2008.

In conclusion, healthy canine specimen's euthanasia remains illegal.
